To be honest this topic first came up while I was browsing porn. I found a video of a girl with a pearl necklace, (Not That kind of pearl necklace, you perverts) and pearl earrings completed with lacy lingerie. Her hair was in a loose curls. She wasn't wearing stripper heals and her make up wasn't like that of the late heath ledger in Dark Night. Instead she was wearing nice shoes and looked like a woman that could have just come from a gala. I'd never been so turned on by a porn star that wasn't naked.
This got me to thinking. Since when did hipster chic become the go to for women that want to dress up.

I'm sorry, this is in no way attractive. I understand that it is cheap, ironic and is trying to convey your personality but What the Fuck. Appropriating your grandma's curtains for a skirt isn't sexy. EVER.
That above is pretty much what I see everywhere these days. Hipsters. The thing about hipsters is they were dressing like that so that they wouldn't be mainstream. Anything that encourages people to be cheap, lazy and not give a shit about the way they look is going to become mainstream. It is mainstream.
So instead of giving up the hipster look they are adapting it.

Above is a style known as rockabilly. Basically take a hipster and add tattoos and a bit of old school rock and roll. When I say old school, I mean old school, like Elvis. Then add in a bit of glam rock leopard print and go with it. I do have a little bit more respect to this because they incorporate a bit of glamour into their style but are still basically hipsters.
Then there is the frat house style. You know the ones. Popped collars, backwards hats and hoodies (we know what wearing a hoodie will get you.). Wearing skateboard brand clothing yet have never stepped on a skateboard. I call these guys the college clones. They lack originality and think brand names make them cool.
The female equivalent of this is what I like to call ugg style. Generally Uggs, sweatpants, tshirt/hoodie something more akin to pajamas.

Now I understand the need for comfort and shit like that but ladies when going out for lunch, the mall, or for drinks, anything but grocery shopping or taking out the trash put some real clothes on.
Last but most definitely not least is the douche style.
Does this even need an explanation. No, I didn't think so. Everyone knows the douche style, society in general makes fun of them. Yet they persist in wearing it and don't see a problem.
What style would I like to see? It's simple, Class.
The best part about classy is that it is remarkably simple. Yet ever so sexy for both men and women.
So what the fuck? Where them classy bitches at?
Later Days,
NtH

lol @ never been so turned on at porn that wasn't naked.
ReplyDeleteI LOATHE the hipster look, never heard of the rockabilly look but hate it to pieces. I couldn't agree with you more. I am proud to say that I own NONE of those clothing articles. Furthermore I would never look twice at a guy rocking the frat look.
I am proud to be a classy woman (in dress if not always action) and don't own a pair of UGGS, sweatpants, track jacket, ed hardy anything, or anything remotely hipster-ish.
The fashion trends of late are nothing if not disturbing.
Being in college, I totally RELATE (i wear dresses, simple and sometimes floral but not overboard. Sometimes skinny jeans and a blouse. Nothing too much). The sad thing is, this hipster chic look is actually expensive. You go to Forever 21, Charlote Russe, Express, etc all these stores have those clothes for about 30 dollars more expensive. I don't think what I wear defines me (nobody should ever think that), but I do believe in making myself presentable, because it reflects your maturity and detachment from petty things like "l0l this neon jeggings = self expression!"
ReplyDeleteA classy porn star. Hmmmmmmm
ReplyDeleteLOL @ topic came up while browsing porn. Have seen the frat house style and hate it. Especially when it doesn't apply to most of the people wearing it.
ReplyDeleteNot classy at all but have realized that I'm not a gangsta by any means. Have been beat up in fights and mugged before so realized that I'm pretty normal. Slowly looking to define my own style (irl).
Not related to topic itself but think you've got a good "style"/"voice" for your blog. Of course could be since just through internet but feels genuine/consistent. Trying to figure out my blog style a bit more and realized may also need to figure out my personal style before that. Anyway, became a long comment but good post.
I'm with you Hero, nothing DQ's a guy for me quicker than Ed Hardy/Tap Out anything or looking as if they haven't showered in a week. I appreciate a guy that looks nice. Dark jeans, button down shirt, shined shoes... a little effort when you go out with me is appreciated. And I return the favor. I have a fair amount of style, especially for living where I do, and I try to put myself together as the norm, not the exception. It's more for me, than for someone else. I tend to lean towards classic as opposed to trendy but I mix it a little for fun from time to time.
